The Open Day will give you the chance to explore our study programmes and our research activities, campus facilities, student accommodation offer, and student support services.

Welcome to the Open Day of the University of Luxembourg!

Our Open Day is a public event offering prospective students the opportunity to discover more about the University of Luxembourg and receive immediate feedback to your questions about the University, our study programmes and our research activities, how to apply, accommodation, student life or services and opportunities offered by the University of Luxembourg.

What to expect from the event?

Come and meet us on Saturday 18 March 2023 from 09.30 to 16.00 on Belval Campus in Esch-sur-Alzette. Join us at the University of Luxembourg’s presentations and information stands or take part in guided tours of Belval Campus and of the University’s facilities (library, student housing, laboratories, etc.).

Guided Tours of the Structural Engineering Laboratory in the Halle d’essais Ingénieurs

Buildings and bridge structures are nowadays mostly constructed out of concrete, masonry, steel and wood. Purpose of the Structural Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Engineering is the investigation of the resistances and load capacities of named material and structures. Beyond the material evaluation, connections and full-scale structural elements are tested.  The guided tour will show material testing devices, a concrete laboratory, climatic chambers and the large testing frames capable to apply loads up to 400 000 kg.

Guided tours of the Simulation Teaching Unit : never the first time on a patient

The simulation teaching unit of Medical Education provides state of the art equipment enabling our students to acquire the necessary know-how in a protected environment. An Anatomy suite, a Digital Learning suite, a Virtual Hospital suite and a Task Training suite are used in several courses of our Bachelor of Medicine and will be used in the future in our new Nursing Bachelor programmes.

Guided tours of the research labs of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB)

Discover brain organoids

Visit the lab of the Developmental and Cellular Biology group to learn how they generate three-dimensional cell cultures to study neurodegenerative diseases. These brain organoids are derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells and help researchers understand mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level.

Neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s disease

Visit the lab of the Neuroinflammation group and learn more about the role played by the immune cells of the brain in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Discover the different cell types studied by the researchers – microglia, neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes – through beautiful microscopy images.

Studying the brain thanks to yeasts and mammalian cells

Visit the lab of the Enzymology & Metabolism group and explore different models used to study human diseases, from neurodegenerative disorders to rare diseases. Discover how yeasts and mammalian cell lines can be cultivated in the lab. Learn how these models are invaluable for drug screens and to better understand molecular mechanisms of diseases.

LUX:Plorations

The LUX:plorations comics feature stories around science and research with a connection to Luxembourg. Dive into the universe of research in the Grand-Duchy, by following the journey of a water molecule, taking a ride through your intestines, discovering the magic of math, or reading about many other adventures. Discover our auditoriums and classrooms, with free access, from 9.00 to 16.00.

Computational Creativity Hub : how artificial intelligence meets Art

The Computational Creativity Hub is a living lab where researchers, students and artists work together to brainstorm, make research and produce new approaches, methodologies, artworks dealing with the future of art.

Learn more about Pepper robot, Smart photobooth, Robodog, Mirror Mirror, Duex Ex Machina and Automatic mixed painting.

Studio d’Architecture

The visitors will see a presentation of selected teaching and research projects developed at the Master in Architecture Programme, a selection of in-house publications, and would be able to engage with members of the teaching staff with direct questions.

Free access facility visits

During the Open Day

  • The University café on Belval Campus (Maison du Savoir – 1st floor), FOOD CAFÉ, will be open from 09.00 to 16.00.
  • The University restaurant of Belval Campus, FOOD HOUSE, will be open from 11.30 to 14.30.
  • Payment in cash and lunch vouchers only.

Catering on site

Following the Luxembourg government’s announced intention to lift most COVID-19 restrictions shortly, the Open Day will take place without CovidCheck regime. The event is now planned to be open to all visitors, and proof of vaccination, recovery from COVID-19 infection or negative tests will not be required. 

However, given the high number of expected guests, the wearing of a face mask is mandatory at the event. 

We continue to request that guests register for the event.

Please note that a photographer will be present at this event. Images may be published on the University’s social media, website channels or print products. If you do not wish to be photographed, please alert the photographer on site.

How do I get to Belval Campus?

Free parking space will be available. Please use the Parking “Maison du Savoir”.

In case you want to use public transport, please go online to mobiliteit.lu for more information and timetables of trains or buses. 

Due to construction works on line 60, all trains between Luxembourg and Bettembourg are replaced in both directions by a substitute bus service on 18 March 2023.
